What is AVID?
Mission:
AVID’s mission is to close the achievement gap by preparing all students for college readiness and success in a global society.
Who are AVID students?
AVID is an internationally recognized college readiness program designed to increase the number of students who are traditionally underrepresented to enroll and persist in college. These include students from ethnic minorities, first in family to attend college, or of economic need, however all eligible students may benefit from the AVID program. Students must have the potential and desire to attend college as well as to commit to rigorous college preparatory courses such as Advanced Placement and Early College.
What is the AVID elective class?
AVID Elective Class – Yearlong academic support program that prepares students for college eligibility and success.
- Supports students by teaching skills and behaviors for academic success using “WICOR” strategies – Writing, Inquiry, Collaboration, Organization and Reading
- Teaches skills on note taking, test taking and time management
- Provides support with tutorials and strong student/teacher relationships
- Creates a positive peer group for students
- Promotes personal achievement gained through hard work and determination
- Provides college preparatory activities and career exploration
